Swedish taxi licence requirements

To drive a taxi in Sweden, you need the required taxi driver licence, called taxiförarlegitimation. The process includes eligibility requirements, two theory tests, a practical driving test, a medical certificate and an application to Transportstyrelsen. This guide explains the driver licence, rather than the operator permit for running a taxi business.

Check eligibility first

The usual minimum age is 20. The main driving licence route requires a category B licence held for at least two years, or a category D licence. A specific exception from age 18 applies to people meeting defined education and qualification conditions; it is not a general exception for every young driver.

Medical suitability and good conduct are also assessed. If an issue may affect your application, check the possibility of a preliminary decision before paying for a full training plan. Transportstyrelsen makes the assessment; Taxitest cannot approve your personal circumstances.

Prepare both theory tests

Safety and behaviour contains 70 questions, of which 65 count towards the result. You need at least 48 correct answers. Legislation contains 50 questions, of which 46 count, and requires at least 34 correct. The ordinary time is 50 minutes for each test.

The official taxi theory tests are in Swedish. English explanations can support your studies, but do not change the official test language. Learn the Swedish terms using the English glossary.

Plan the validity periods

Both theory tests must be passed within six months of the first passed theory test. When applying, the theory tests must be no more than three years old and the driving test no more than one year old. The medical certificate must be no more than two months old when Transportstyrelsen receives the application.

Apply and wait for the licence card

Use Transportstyrelsen's current application instructions. Passing the tests does not itself authorise you to start taxi work. Wait until the licence has been issued and you have the required physical card.

A foreign driving licence may require evidence of validity and licence history. Separate rules apply to using a foreign licence for Swedish taxi work, including the EEA citizenship condition described by the authority. Check your own situation before assuming that a translated licence is sufficient.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I practise?

Start with the free English practice questions. They are original learning material, not official test questions.

Do I need a taxi operator permit as an employee?

The operator permit concerns the business. You still need your personal driver licence. Running your own business creates separate requirements explained in the Swedish permit guide.
