Before booking taxi tests in Sweden, check whether you meet the requirements for taxiförarlegitimation. Age, driving experience, medical suitability and personal suitability are separate parts of the assessment. Passing a practice quiz does not replace any of them.
The ordinary age and driving licence route
The standard route requires you to be at least 20 years old and to have held a category B driving licence for at least two years. Holding category D is another route within the rules. A specific exception can apply from age 18 to a person who, through upper-secondary or equivalent education, has acquired the prescribed basic professional-driver qualification for vehicles requiring category D or DE. In this exception, the statute specifies age 18 and a category B driving licence instead of the ordinary age and licence-history conditions. The exception concerns the specified training and qualification. This provision does not itself add a separate requirement to hold a D or DE licence. Simply being 18 and holding B is insufficient.
Check your actual licence history before paying for tests. If you previously held a taxi driver licence, special rules may affect the two-year B requirement. Transportstyrelsen decides how the requirements apply to your documents; do not assume that experience driving privately in another country automatically meets the Swedish requirement. The licence overview explains the whole application route.
Medical and personal suitability
You need the prescribed medical certificate. When Transportstyrelsen receives your application, the certificate must be no more than two months old. Arrange it around the application date rather than obtaining it long before your study period. A medical appointment and the authority's licensing assessment are different steps.
Transportstyrelsen also assesses whether you are suitable to work as a taxi driver, including personal reliability. A brief online checklist cannot predict the outcome of an individual case. If suitability is uncertain, investigate the authority's preliminary-decision process before making a large investment in training. Ask for the current requirements for your circumstances, rather than relying on a friend's previous decision.
Tests, validity and the physical card
You must pass both taxi theory modules and the practical driving test. Both theory modules must be passed within six months of the first successful module. At application, the theory results must be no more than three years old and the driving result no more than one year old. These are different time limits.
Passing the tests does not itself authorise taxi work. Complete the application and wait for the licence card before starting. A taxi company's taxitrafiktillstånd is a separate permit; obtaining your own driver licence does not grant an operator permit.
A useful eligibility check
- Confirm your age and the relevant driving licence categories and dates.
- Check how any foreign driving licence must be handled in your case.
- Plan the medical certificate close to your application.
- Keep track of the two theory results and the driving result separately.
- Read the cost guide before booking.
Frequently asked questions
Does an ordinary B licence let me work as a taxi driver?
You also need taxiförarlegitimation. Category B alone is not the taxi driver licence.
Can English study material replace the Swedish-language theory test?
English explanations support learning. The official taxi theory tests are conducted in Swedish, so practise the Swedish terminology using the glossary.
